Shed of Knowledge: A Modern Oasis in Urban Hong Kong

Architectural Services Department Hksar's Award-Winning Library Station Design

The Shed of Knowledge, designed by the Architectural Services Department Hksar, is a unique library station located in Tai Wai, New Territories, Hong Kong. Drawing inspiration from the Chinese notion of books and readings, the design employs the motif of bamboo, represented through aluminum extruded tiles fixed on wire. These tiles are arranged in different directions to create interesting textures and colors, forming a pattern that faces the pedestrian street.

What sets this design apart is its simplicity and integration into the neighborhood. The exterior is made of silver aluminum corrugated sheet, while the interior uses prefabricated concrete panels. The metallic look of the shelter creates an engaging dialogue with the busy urban scene. Despite the confined site area, the design team managed to incorporate a small landscape garden inside the library station, offering the public a relaxing and cozy environment for reading and resting.

The library station was realized through dry construction and prefabrication due to the confined site area. The main steel structure was prefabricated in a factory and delivered on-site, minimizing disturbance to the neighborhood during construction. The library station measures 9m x 3.2m, with a site area of 87 sq. m and a construction floor area of 29 sq. m.

One of the key features of the Shed of Knowledge is its 24-hour borrow and return service, making it a valuable asset to the local community. The library station is conveniently located next to the MTR station, providing all-weather access. The design includes inclusive elements such as seats for short reading and a barrier-free ramp for public access.

The design concept of the library station is based on traditional Chinese bamboo writing slips, a main media and writing medium in China with deep cultural and historical references. This concept, combined with modern spatial composition, the use of highly recyclable sustainable aluminum, and barrier-free design, results in a comfortable and harmonious library station. The Shed of Knowledge was awarded Golden in A' Street and City Furniture Design Award in 2021, a testament to its innovative and impactful design.
